- The smooth muscles of corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum relax allowing excess blood to fill in through the arteries while drainage of the blood through the veins are blocked.
- The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand.
- The tunica albuginea will trap the blood thereby sustaining erection.
- Erection is reversed when muscles in the penis contract to stop inflow of blood and open outflow channels.
